What is EFT Tapping?

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), or "tapping," is a self-help practice that involves gently tapping on specific acupuncture points while focusing on an emotion or thought. The process helps calm the nervous system, reduces stress hormones like cortisol, and shifts the body out of "fight or flight" mode into a more balanced state.

When combined with gratitude statements, EFT not only eases anxious feelings but also rewires the brain to notice and appreciate positives-even in stressful times.

Stress, Anxiety, and the Body

When stress builds up, the body's healing systems are disrupted. Elevated stress hormones can:

  • Lower immune function

  • Increase inflammation

  • Disrupt sleep and digestion

  • Contribute to headaches, tension, and mood swings

Kid feel this too. Academic pressure, social challenges, or even busy schedules can overwhelm young nervous systems. Over time, chronic stress can contribute to illness and make it harder for the body to bounce back.

That's why pairing stress-relieving techniques like EFT with gratitude practices can be so powerful. Gratitude has been shown to boost emotional well-being, support better sleep, and even resilience against illness.

EFT + Gratitude: A Calming Combo for Families

Traditional EFT involves identifying a stressor and creating a balancing statement (for example, "Even though I feel nervous about my test, I deeply and completely accept myself"). When you weave gratitude into the process, you're not only releasing stress-you're actively shifting your focus toward appreciation and positivity.

Here's how it might look for a child:

  1. Name the feeling: "I feel worried about making new friends."

  2. Set up a gratitude statement: While tapping, say, "Even though I feel worried, I'm grateful for the friends I already have."

  3. Tap through points: Continue tapping while adding more gratitude: "I'm tankful for my family who loves me," or "I'm grateful that I can be kind to others."

  4. Notice the shift: Most children (and adults!) feel calmer, more grounded, and even more optimistic after a few rounds.

Why Gratitude Matters for Health

Practicing gratitude trains the brain to release dopamine and serotonin- the "feel-good" chemicals that counterbalance stress hormones. When families make gratitude a part of their routine (such as sharing three things they're thankful for at bedtime or after school), the body spends less time in a stress response and more time in a healing state.

Combining gratitude with tapping amplifies the effect, giving the nervous system both release and renewal.

A Simple Bedtime Family Ritual

How can you bring EFT and gratitude into everyday life without it feeling like "one more thing to do?" Bedtime is the perfect opportunity. Here's a short, family-friendly ritual you can try tonight:

  1. Gather together. Sit with your kiddo in a calm space before bed.

  2. Choose one feeling. Ask "What's one thing that felt hard today?" (Example: "I was frustrated with homework.")

  3. Begin tapping. While gently tapping on the main points (side of hand, eyebrow, under eye, collarbone), use a simple setup:

    1. "Even though I felt frustrated with homework, I am safe and loved."

  4. Add gratitude. After a round or two, shift the focus:

    1. "I'm grateful that I finished my homework anyway."

    2. "I'm thankful for the help I got."

    3. "I'm happy tomorrow is a new day."

  5. End with peace. Take a deep breath together and day, "I'm grateful for my cozy bed and for this time together."

This routine helps reduce stress and promotes a calm mind and a grateful heart, helping your kiddos fall asleep.

Bringing It All Together

Family wellness means addressing both the body and the mind. Chiropractic care supports both! Tools like EFT tapping and gratitude are great "right now" strategies to calm the nervous system and nurture resilience.
