A Brain-Based Holiday

The holidays are supposed to feel magical, but let’s be honest… they also ask a lot from your brain. Between running around, planning, cooking, traveling, and trying to show up for everyone, your mind can end up feeling like it’s running a marathon without training for it.

In our office, we talk a lot about how the brain drives everything. When your brain is calm and supported, the rest of your body follows. So here are a few simple, realistic things you can do to help your brain stay steady and actually enjoy the season.

Keep some kind of sleep rhythm

Your brain loves a routine. You don’t have to be perfect, just try not to swing from “up all night” to “crashing at 8 pm.” Even keeping your bedtime within the same hour gives your brain the consistency it needs to stay focused and keep your mood grounded.

Fuel your brain instead of just grabbing whatever’s in front of you

Holiday food is fun, and you should enjoy it. Just try to balance it with a few things your brain genuinely needs protein, healthy fats, a little fiber, and plenty of water. When your blood sugar is steady, your brain stays clearer, and your energy doesn’t tank halfway through the day.

Move your body in small, easy ways

You don’t need an intense workout. A quick walk, stretching before bed, or dancing around the kitchen while you cook is enough to boost blood flow to your brain. That movement helps calm stress and makes everything feel a little more manageable.

Build in a little quiet time

Your brain can’t stay “on” all day. Find tiny pockets of stillness, even if it’s just sitting in your car for a minute before walking inside or taking a few slow breaths between errands. These little resets help your nervous system settle so you don’t end up fried by 5 pm.

Give your brain something fun to play with

Creativity and curiosity light up the brain. Try a puzzle, bake something you’ve never tried before, color with your kids, or start a book you’ve been meaning to read. When your brain gets to “blossom” a bit, it handles stress way better.

Drop the pressure to make everything perfect

Honestly, this might be the most important one. Your brain relaxes when you stop trying to orchestrate the “perfect” holiday. Focus on connection. Laugh at the little things. Let the imperfect moments be part of the story.
